Empowering Women Through Education: A Successful Breast Cancer Awareness Session at Cedarwood
On June 18, 2026, we had the privilege of hosting an engaging and informative Breast Cancer Awareness session led by Benita and Gay Lynn from the Minnesota Department of Health's Sage/Sage Plus Programs Cancer Control Section. Their commitment to educating and empowering women made for an impactful and fun event that left attendees with valuable knowledge and greater confidence in taking charge of their breast health and wanting to spread the word!
Throughout the session, Benita and Gay Lynn provided easy-to-understand educational information about breast cancer awareness, early detection, and the importance of routine screenings. They emphasized that recognizing changes early and seeking appropriate medical care can make a significant difference in outcomes.
What made this presentation especially memorable was the hands-on learning experience. Using breast models and other educational props, they demonstrated what to look for during a breast self-examination and explained the proper techniques for checking for lumps and other unusual changes. This interactive approach gave participants the opportunity to see and feel examples of what they had learned, helping to build confidence in performing self-checks at home.
The session also encouraged open conversation, allowing participants to ask questions, share experiences, and gain a better understanding of the resources available through the Sage and Sage Plus Programs. By creating a welcoming and supportive environment, Benita and Gay Lynn helped remove barriers to discussing breast health and reinforced the importance of regular screenings and preventive care.

Their presentation equipped attendees with practical knowledge they can use to advocate for their own health and to encourage the women in their lives to stay informed and proactive.

This event is hosted by AABCA, The Breast Cancer Education Association, and the University of Minnesotas Masonic Cancer Center.
