Happy Birthday Grace!
Grace Ryman, the youngest of nine children, was born in Aberdeen, South Dakota ninety years ago this month! Soon after her birth, the family moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota. Her father would later walk out on the family leaving her mother to raise the children on her own. Grace grew up in south Minneapolis. Times were difficult and the family moved frequently. Her very first job was as a waitress at the Bridgeman’s Ice Cream parlor on Hennepin Avenue near Lake Street. When she was in her early 20’s Grace met Elmer (AL) Ryman, and they soon fell in love and were married in 1942. World War II interrupted their new life together as Elmer was off to Army boot camp in Decatur, Illinois, and then shipped overseas for two years. Over the years Grace and Al lived in Richfield, St. Louis Park, Crystal Village and finally Golden Valley. They raised three children, Dawn, Jim and Ron and when the children were all in school Grace began a 25-year career working for Red Owl Grocery. She has wonderful memories of her fellow workers and her many customers there. In 1960 Grace was honored by WCCO Radio as the “WCCO Good Neighbor of The Week”. Grace and Al attended Redeemer Lutheran Church in Robbinsdale where she taught first-grade Sunday school for several years. They later joined Calvary Lutheran Church in Golden Valley and for over 15 years she sang in the choir, one of her great joys. These days she enjoys attending services here at the Heathers. Grace was a wonderful cook and enjoyed family get-togethers at their home in Golden Valley. She has fond memories of turning the basement pool table into a large dinner table on Thanksgiving and other family events in order to accommodate all sixteen family members. A few years after Al’s death in 1991 Grace sold her home and moved to a townhouse in Golden Valley where she lived until relocating to the Heathers in December 2010 For her 75th birthday, Grace was treated to the sights of New York City with one of her son’s and his family who lived in upstate New York. Grace loves to make people laugh and has gained the reputation of injecting “humorous” comments into almost any conversation. She enjoys people! She also enjoys visits from family and friends, outings, lunches out and occasional picnics. Grace boasts three children, eight grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
Happy 70th Anniversary Fran and Maxine!
Fran and Maxine Gray have been married 70 years on July 11. Maxine was a friend of Fran’s cousin and they met at her cabin. They dated for a year and then were married in Minneapolis. They moved to Robbinsdale and then to Golden Valley. Fran served for three years in the US Army and received a bronze medal for driving 100 hours straight in Germany.
Fran owned a Gas Station in Golden Valley for twenty five years while Maxine did the bookkeeping and raised four daughters. When Fran retired from the service station business they spent their summers in Alexandria, MN. and the winters in Mesa, AZ. While in Alexandria, most mornings they would go fishing at 8:00 am. They have four daughters, seven grandchildren, thirteen grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren. When asked, “What is the secret to a marriage of 70 year?” Fran replied, “Get the right one the first time!”
Happy 61st Anniversary Eloise and Russ Peterson!
Eloise and Russ Peterson met at Minneapolis College immediately following World War II. Russ had just finished his military service and Eloise was working as a Placement and Activities Director at the college. Eloise’s attraction to Russ was initially simple – he had a car and could provide her with transportation. They courted for three years before getting married and starting a family. They have two sons – born two years apart. Russ began as a Credit Manager and was later promoted to Salesman selling steel. He then left there to work at one of his customer’s company while Eloise was working for Honeywell. She stayed home once the boys were born. Russ’s new job transferred them to Arkansas, then to Tennessee and then back to Arkansas where they retired. They traveled a lot together. Russ often went on fishing trips to remote destinations with friends. Russ had a pilot’s license. He recalls the time he was flying with a friend of his to Flin Flom, Manitoba. With his friend piloting the plane the unthinkable happened; the engine died! His friend told Russ, “It’s your turn”. Unbeknownst to his friend was the fact that they had to switch over to the second gas tank. Russ was cool as a cucumber – his friend not so much. He’s not flying anymore due to his lost eyesight. Additionally, Eloise had a stroke. Despite their health setbacks, they remain positive and are a wonderful couple to be around. We are so happy that they joined us here at the Heathers!
