National Night Out promotes community.  When our residents & guests gather and know one another it sends a message, that the community is strong, organized, and people care what happens.

police officers and firefighters.

Knowing who lives around you and being in tune with your surroundings is an important step

in safety and building a community.

Here at Autumn Woods, We Are, Family!

WHEN YOU MOVE TO THE HEATHERS ESTATES,

YOU NEVER HAVE TO MOVE AGAIN

(Pictured left to right-

Bev Beyer, Phyllis Mork, Lea Beckey, Elaine Cohen)

The longevity of Heathers Estates residents is legendary. Note. I am not talking about how old these residents are, but how long they have lived at The Heathers Estates. It is a testimonial to the great living atmosphere that encourages social activities. Each of the women pictured have lived in this apartment building for more than thirty (30) years. They all moved in, some with their husbands, when the building was known as “Lamplighter Apartments”. When Lang Nelson bought the building, they were happy that a property management company, rather than an individual, had made the investment.

The reasons they chose Lamplighter then, and the reasons they choose to stay now are dissimilar. The reason Elaine, Phyllis, and Bev moved in was mostly location; close to Sonnesyn school, close to work at Pako, close to friends. Lea said she and her husband moved because of the indoor pool. Phyllis said she wanted a dishwasher and many apartment buildings did not have dishwashers then.

The quotable reasons they have stayed all these years: “This is home”. “Can’t imagine living anywhere else”. “Lang Nelson keeps up the building”.  “I love my courtyard apartment”. “It’s convenient and close to shopping and synagogue”.  And, not surprisingly after more than 30 years, “it’s too much work to move”. The one consistent reason that they stay is the people who live here, their neighbors and friends. Some said all of their friends are here at the Heathers. That’s because they themselves are good friends and neighbors to all the other residents of The Heathers Estates.

If you’d like to feel this oneness where you live, contact Judy Brown 763-544-1220 at

The Heathers Estates, 2900 Douglas Dr. N. Crystal.

In May we celebrated the 71st Anniversary of some very special residents!

HAPPY 71ST ANNIVERSARY!

Michael and Gertrude Novicki met 73 years ago at a friend’s house party. Michael knew immediately that she was the one. They shared the same religion and – just as important – she was a very pretty girl! They both were quite the dancers – enjoying everything from the polka and shotish to the cha-cha and waltz. They courted for two years and were married at St. Cyril Church in Minneapolis. Michael was employed as a machinist at Cornelius Company. The started a family during World War II and raised two girls and two boys. Gertrude and Michael loved to entertain. Their fondest memories were the many holiday celebrations with the delicious home cooked meals and bakery desserts prepared by Gertrude. They often played board and/or yard games. They enjoyed their summers going to northern Minnesota with all the lakes and cabins. They are a very close family. When Michael was asked what the secret is to a 71 year marriage, he replied “I can’t imagine anyone else; I just love her”!

Please join us for our next Anniversary celebration and see why our residents choose the Heathers to call home!

Residents at the Pines in Richfield at 400 West 67th Street enjoy scheduled activities seven days a week.  Activities range from playing a variety of games (Jenga, trivia, and knitting with Fern, featured in the above pictures) to live entertainment, and chair aerobics to help with stretch and balance.  The Residents and their families gather every day at 10:45a.m. and 3:00p.m. for coffee and friendly conversations.

The Pines is excited to announce their care suites are now upgraded to support memory and specialized care suites.  This advanced care living program provides the Pines Residents the ability to remain within an Assisted Living environment as their care level increases, and closes the gap between assisted living and skilled care.

The Pines is open to the public every Wednesday from 3 to 6 PM as the Ida Marie Restaurant is baking fresh cookies for purchase by residents and neighbors.  Free cookies and coffee are a part of the festivities.  We hope to see you then!  For an immediate need, please call 612-861-3331 for a tour. We would love to share this special place which is home for many of the great seniors of Richfield and beyond.

~ Calling All Gardeners ~

The Crossings was awarded a grant to add raised garden beds for its Community Garden.

Monday June 11th Brown College Students were here helping the residents of The Crossings at Brookwood with their gardens. The main focus was to build raised planting beds to make it easier for seniors to work in their gardens. This will allow more people access to garden, which so many of them grew up with, though may not have been able to continue to do so.

Thank you to Gardening Matters for the grant and to Brown College for their help making this possible. You both helped to make this such a big success.

You too can be part of the fun, just contact The Crossings at Brookwood to find out how!
