Lang Nelson’s Nurse Liaison Program,

Another Reason to Live The Experience

*Make the most out of your Physician visits and Advocate for your Health*

When visiting your physician or clinic, providing a clear picture of your current health status is so important!  I have a few tips for making your visit a beneficial experience:

  • Take your Medication listing that includes the medication name, dosage, how many times a day you take your medicine, and when you began taking it.
  • Write down your current medical diagnosis and any current health concerns and your questions.
  • List any Food or Medication Allergies.
  • Write down any recent health or functional changes and when you starting being aware of them any falls, feeling unsteady when you walk or change positions, changes in mood or behaviors, any weight or appetite fluctuations, and changes in your hearing or vision.

Your Physician team will find his information beneficial and you will feel assured knowing that you participated in your own health care planning.

Long before Target Field, and long before the Dome, there was the Met – Metropolitan Stadium in Bloomington, the initial home ballpark for the Minnesota Twins.

…he threw a pitch at Harmon’s head. Oh, was I ticked. I charged the mound from the dugout.Rod Carew

Fall Awareness in February

Depending on your age the result of a fall can have very different consequences.  Anyone can trip on a rug, toy or lose their balance on the ice resulting in a fall.  When we are young falls are infrequent and usually just an annoyance.  This is not the case as we age.

The incidence of falls and potential for injury from a fall increases greatly with age. Natural changes and deterioration in the muscular, neurological and sensory systems of the body contribute to this risk.  An increase in incidence of medical conditions as we age such as diabetes, hypertension, osteoporosis (frail bones), anemia or dementia all increase the risk of a fall or injury from a fall.  Additionally due to these body changes and medical diagnosis, medications are prescribed and you guessed it, they increase the risk of a fall or potential injury.

30-40% of those individuals over 65 have fallen in the last year; the rate goes up to 50% if over 80 years of age and after 1 fall you are at a 40% chance of falling again in the same year. Types of injury from a fall when older can include a small bruise or skin tear, to a very serious hip fracture or brain bleed or even death.  The majority of injuries treated in the emergency room for those over the age of 65 are due to falls.

A fall is no longer an inconvenient occurrence as when we were young but a potentially life changing event.  As an older person we often do not get up and move on after a fall. We now may not fully regain our independence, be displaced from our home, need surgery for a hip fracture or worse.  At minimum we will be afraid of falling again and that alone changes everyday life.

So now that I have your attention and you know a fall can be serious…What can you do, or your loved one’s do, to help decrease risk of fall or injury from a fall?

  • Eliminate throw rugs (though they may add to the aesthetics of your home… they are a fall waiting to happen).
  • Decrease clutter in the home, eliminate unneeded furniture, clean up cords, have a dedicated mail area that is routinely cleared.
  • Illuminate walkways for night time (vision and ability to adjust to changes in light decrease with age)
  • Have your doctor review your medications (can any be eliminated or changed to decrease risk of fall?)
  • If you have a fall even without an injury notify the facility nurse or your practitioner right away (perhaps an adjustment needs to be made in your treatment plan)
  • Use your assistive device (walker, cane) as prescribed by your doctor or physical therapist.
  • Call for help if you are feeling dizzy or under the weather (better to be safe).
  • Go to facility exercise to help increase muscle tone and balance (if you don’t use it you lose it is not just a saying)
  • Consider bars and handles in your bathroom to help maintain balance (many serious injuries from falls occur in the bathroom).
  • Invest in a good pair of shoes, (no slippery soles or heels, they may not be as fashionable but are worth your safety).

These are a few things you can do, most are inexpensive and do not take too much time or effort but they can save you much down the line.

Take care and be safe out there.

February is Heart Health Awareness Month along with Valentine’s Day, a time to show and let others know you love them. Go Red for Women and love your heart was celebrated on Friday, February 3rd, residents and staff were encouraged to Wear RED.  A special bake sale was held and $303 was raised to give to the Resident Council to send to the American Heart Association to help fight heart disease. Heart disease is the #1 cause of death in women.

In the afternoon Joe Johnson, Activities Director for The Rivers presented, “History Live- Christian Barnard and the 1st Heart Transplant.” Joe uses electronic media to enhance all of his History Live programs making it a richer learning experience for the residents.

Ask your doctor to help you create a plan to reduce your risk – a plan that includes a heart-healthy diet, exercise and medication, if necessary. Women face six major risk factors for heart disease that can be prevented, controlled or treated with diet, exercise and sometimes prescribed medications. These are:

high blood pressure

high blood cholesterol

tobacco smoke

physical inactivity

obesity or overweight

diabetes

About 250,000 deaths per year in the United States – about 12% of total deaths are due to a lack of regular physical activity in both men and women.  Even low-to-moderate intensity activities when done for as little as 30 minutes a day, can bring benefits. These activities include pleasure walking, climbing stairs, moderate-to-heavy housework, dancing and home exercise. Check with your doctor first and then love your heart and exercise.  Living at The Rivers you have the opportunities exercise in our heated swim spa, join in our stretch and / or exercise classes and enjoy the benefits that physical activity brings.  It’s always more fun and motivating to exercise with friends.  Please join in.  It’s good for your heart more ways than one.
